DOLLS OF HOPE

DOLLS OF HOPE

Fevziye Şehrur, a woman rising from her ashes. This is the story of a woman who stood out amongst all other women that were forced to be displaced, sometimes left their children, neighbors and relatives due to the war started in Syria 8 years ago.

Fevziye Şehrur and her family struggled for life at the heart of the war and bombs in Aleppo for 2 years and one of those bomb dropped right in the center of their house a day.  Şehrur and her family had to escape from Aleppo since their house leveled to the ground. They walked away from everything... Soon after coming to Turkey using normal ways, Fevziye Şehrur and her family decided to turn back to Aleppo. However, Aleppo was not the same city they had left before anymore. Upon seeing that the situation was critical, Şehrur came to Kilis taking her husband (77 years old), daughter, son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren along with her. That was when the story of Fevziye Şehrur started; she was transforming into a woman entrepreneur while running away from the persecution of war as a woman rising from her ashes.

Having ability in tailoring and handicrafts, Şehrur discovered Community Centers on social media. She went to our Kilis Community Center, received information from our friends and registered immediately as she had learned that works suited for her abilities were also carried out there. Establishing good relationships with her teachers and other beneficiaries, Fevziye Şehrur’s handmade dolls became the center of interest gradually. She firstly started to give away these handicraft dolls to her friends and relatives. Then, the dolls went beyond being gifts and turned into an employment opportunity of themselves when a friend of her daughter, who was teacher, came from Italy and aspired for these dolls. Stating that she is happy while crafting her dolls, Şehrur also experiences the happiness of transforming into a woman entrepreneur.

Success as the Whole Family

Şehrur family is actually a source of enthusiasm with its each member. Fevziye Şehrur’s son is originally engineer and he works in furniture business in Turkey while her daughter is originally architecture and works as a teacher. Since Fevziye Şehrur works together with her family, she couldn’t find time to become socialized and she says, “My husband is not able to work but my daughter, son and I work together and meet the needs of our home. We have been here for four and a half year. If we are to stay here, we need to work.”

When she is asked about homeland, her eyes fill with tears naturally... This entrepreneur and strong woman says, wishing it to set an example, “Homeland is precious! We would like to turn back to it but a human being needs to work and produce wherever he/she is. This is what God wants from us. This is more important for people running from war. Staying at home and crying all the time do no good. We shouldn’t be sad and negative day after day.”

I Wish for a War-Free World

She talks happily about the days she spends in the Community Centers while she finds it inadequate to thank for this nice team who brought her and her family back to life again. She wants that everyone around her should come to the Community Centers as she did and should be included in life as productive persons. Her eyes shine with joy when she thinks about the interest, affection and kindliness they received here. She adds when her mind is out to her homeland saying, “I hope all the people staying there are alive and well, I wish the war ends, and I wish for a war-free world.”
